Historic Records Donation
A descendent of the Penrose family recently donated a ledger book and a book containing copies of letters written by Charles Stedman (Dr. Graeme’s son-in-law), the road returns detailing the request Governor Keith made to have a new road surveyed out to his new buildings in Horsham, and a few other documents for consideration to be acquisitioned by the Commonwealth into their collection.
The ledger book (pictured above) details Charles Stedman’s payments for various goods and seems to be for outfitting his ship Nancy for her voyages, or possibly to trade – bread, red and white oak barrel staves, flour, rum, and boards are all mentioned. Business in those days was conducted on account, and as he paid various merchants, he’d have them write in his ledger the date and amount of payment, and what goods or services were purchased, then sign their name as proof of payment.
